REWIND: Ata Kak – Obaa Sima

In 2006, ethnomusicologist Brian Shimkovitz owner of the blog and record label Awesome Tapes From Africa, during a trip in Ghana bought a self-recorded tape of mysterious musician Ata Kak called 'Obaa Sima', a non-stop party full of Ghanian highlife, American 80s rap, Chicago 90s house and some Caribbean touch.

After years of searching, Shimkovitz finally found him and reissued this awesome tape through his label. I hardly recommend a listen!

Portishead's Dummy 20th anniversary

This week we're celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of Dummy by Portishead (Go! Beat, 1994), trip-hop trio formed by Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley. If Blue Lines by Massive Attack is the most important album of the trip-hop subgenre, Dummy is by far the most beautiful. Trip-hop was originated in UK around the city of Bristol in the early 90s. Nowadays, Lana del Rey and FKA Twigs have many to thank of Beth Gibbons' savoir-faire.

You can stream the entire album below:

Remember the original video for 'Sour Times' (sampled from Lalo Schifrin's 'Danube Incident', 1969), the best song of the album (besides well-known 'Glory Box' masterpiece):

And finally, enjoy the epic Roseland New York City Live released on DVD in 1998 and featured by The New York Philharmonic orchestra.
